Often confused with the Someswarar temple (also located in Pazhayarai), this temple is popularly referred to as the Pazhayarai Vada Thali, Muzhaiyur temple and Vallalar Koil. Pazhayarai was once the centre-point of the Chola empire, and one of its capitals, as also the birthplace of two of the 63 Saiva Nayanmars.
