A Chola king, afflicted with brahmahathi dosham for killing sage Heranda Maharishi, worshipped the Mahalingeswarar temple’s gopuram and was cured. In gratitude, he built a temple. Associated with sage Markandeyar, it features intricate 12th or 13th-century architecture.
