This Tevaram Vaippu Sthalam finds mention in a pathigam of the Tevaram saint Sundarar. Due to limitations on the time of the priest, puja takes place only once a day here, in the morning. The sthala puranam of this temple is connected to that of the nearby Tirumeni Azhagar temple at Mappadugai / Pandaravadai. This small but beautiful temple is where Chandran – fearing Suryan’s curse and the effect of eclipses – worshipped Lord Siva and was blessed by Him, and was able to return to the other temple without fear. When Sambandar travelled from Mayiladuthurai to Moovalur, he stopped at this temple to worship the Lord. He found that the ground from here to Moovalur was covered with Siva Lingams. One of the 5 Pancha Ranga Kshetrams on the banks of the Kaveri river, this is where Chandran worshipped Vishnu to be somewhat rid of the curse of losing his lustre. Perumal’s name here references the fragrance that Vishnu imparted to the Vedas, after retrieving them from the demons Madhu and Kaitabha during the Matysa Avataram.
