This temple is located between Kumbakonam and Eragaram, just beyond the northern outskirts of Kumbakonam and Melacavery. Being close to Eragaram, this temple is reckoned as being connected with the Skandanathar temple at Eragaram.

While no detailed sthala puranam is available, it is believed that Murugan worshipped at this temple on his way from Eragaram to Swamimalai. This sthala puranam also speaks to the age of this temple, and the original temple should be over 2000 years old.

Earlier, before the construction of the more recent structural temple here, this place had only this Siva lingam, which is rather large in size. Being located in the fields, this place used to therefore be called Lingathadi Thidal.

The history of this temple is also unknown, in terms of the date of the original structural temple. However, today the temple sports a clean look without disturbing much of its original form. The most recent renovation here is similar in look and effect to several temples in the vicinity which have been renovated around the same time.

While this east facing temple does not have a dhwajasthambham, there is a bali peetham and Nandi on entering the temple premises. A maha mandapam covers the garbhagriham and Amman shrine. The garbhagriham entrance is flanked by Vinayakar, and unusually, Anjaneyar (indicating this is perhaps not original to the temple).

In the koshtams are Nardhana Vinayakar, Dakshinamurti, Lingodhbhavar, Brahma and Durga. In the prakaram are Vinayakar, Murugan with his consorts Valli and Deivanai, Lakshmi, Chandikeswarar, Bhairavar, Suryan and Chandran. There is also a small shrine for Ayyappan in the southwest, and the navagraham shrine in the northeast part of the temple.

Devotees worship here in the belief that it will enhance their career progress and yield prosperity, and also to overcome obstacles as regards marriage.
