Sthala puranam and temple information

It will be useful to read this overview of the Nangur Ekadasa Divya Desam and Ekadasa Rudra Peethams, if you have not already done so, to set the context for eleven temples (including this temple) in Nangur.

There are six places that are called Vinnagaram, referring to Vishnu Nagaram or the eternal space. These are: Tiruvinnagaram (Oppiliappan Koil), Kazhicheerama Vinnagaram (Sirkazhi), Nandipura Vinnagaram (Nathan Koil), Arimeya Vinnagaram (Kudamadu Koothan temple in Nangur), Parameswara Vinnagaram (Kanchipuram) and this temple – Vaikunta Vinnagaram. At this temple, Perumal presents himself with his consorts Sridevi, Bhudevi and Nila Devi, as well as Adiseshan, as He would in Vaikuntam.

This Perumal came here from Vaikuntam directly. Here is the story of how that happened.

It is believed that there are two levels of Vaikuntam. Before the main Vaikuntam where Vishnu resides, is Karya Vaikuntam, which one has to reach first and be evaluated for fitness to go to Vaikuntam. Swetaketu – a just and kind king of the Ikshvaku dynasty – was a descendant of Rama. When his life on earth was over, he reached Karya Vaikuntam, but he thought he was at Vaikuntam itself. Then he suddenly felt hungry, and wondered why this should be the case, since there are no desires and wants in Vaikuntam. So he asked Narada as to what was happening and why. Narada pointed out that he had not performed enough charity (danam). He also recommended that Swetaketu go to Gajaranya Kshetram (this place) and perform penance. The king did as instructed, and Vishnu came to this place, in the same form as he is in Vaikuntam – in amarndha kolam, one leg folded, one hand on Adiseshan and another hand showing the Abhaya Varada hastam. Since Vishnu appeared in his Vaikuntam form, this place is called Vaikunta Vinnagaram.

As in Vaikuntam, Nachiyar / Thayar is not separate from Vishnu, and so is inside the garbhagriham itself, at this temple.

Sage Uthangar and King Uparicharavasu attained moksham after worshipping Perumal here.

In the Tamil month of Thai (January-February), the Garuda Sevai utsavam takes place at the nearby Badrinarayana Perumal temple at Nangur, where the Perumal and Garuda of each of the 11 Nangur Divya Desam temples arrive here. This festival is a must visit for those who are interested.

Other information for your visit

There are no accommodation options in Nangur. The nearest place for decent budget and mid-range accommodation is Mayiladuthurai. Lately, some hotels and AirBnB type accommodation has come up around Sirkazhi.
