Vyaghrapada, the tiger-footed sage, was here with his son Upamanyu. He would pluck flowers and offer garlands to the Lord here. Once, when he was out collecting flowers, Upamanyu was hungry and started crying. Immediately, Lakshmi here asked Purushottaman to come from Vaikuntam, and bring milk with Him, to feed the child. The milk came from Tiruparkadal ! This is the reason for the temple Teertham being named Tiruparkadal Teertham.

It is believed that Perumal here came from Ayodhya (ie, the Rama from Ramayanam). The place is also called VanPurushottaman.

This is an old Chola temple, but has also seen relatively recent brickwork additions to its structure.

In the Tamil month of Thai (January-February), the Garuda Sevai utsavam takes place at the nearby Badrinarayana Perumal temple at Nangur, where the Perumal and Garuda of each of the 11 Nangur Divya Desam temples arrive here. This festival is a must visit for those who are interested.
