Kallur is located to the east of Nallur on the Kumbakonam-Devananjeri road, south of the southern banks of the Kollidam river.

We visited this temple in August 2022, and so most of the photographs in the gallery below are from that time. A year later, sometime in July 2023, the temple had a kumbhabhishekam conducted, and now sports a new look. Some pictures (courtesy Veppathur Vasu) are also included in the gallery below.

This temple does not have a recorded sthala puranam. However, from the indications available here, it appears to originally have been a Pallava period temple, with several later additions including during the Chola period and by the Marathas.

The temple itself is located in the centre of the village, with a large pond (which perhaps served / serves as the temple’s tank) located east of the temple. In the western part of the village is the Perumal temple of the village, suggesting that the street on which the temple is located, would have likely been the village Agraharam at one time.

The temple has two main entrances – in the east and the south. There are really only 3 shrines here – the Nandi mandapam with a beautiful Nandi and a bali peetham, the main garbhagriham, and the south facing Amman shrine located to the right of the Nandi.

The main garbhagriham is housed at the end of a longish elevated platform, which may at one time have been a maha mandapam. A second Nandi is located just in front of the garbhagriham. In the koshtam is an excellently sculpted vigraham of Dakshinamurti in the south, and an interesting Ardhanareeswarar in the west, and Durga in the north. In the prakaram, a long mandapam runs the entire western breadth of the temple, and houses Vinayakar, Murugan with his consorts Valli and Deivanai, several lingams and other deities, and Mahalakshmi. There is also a separate Chandikeswarar shrine and a navagraham shrine.
