The Tiruparankundram temple located on the outskirts of Madurai, is the first of the six arupadai Veedu temples dedicated to Murugan. This temple complex also houses the Satya Gireeswarar temple for Lord Siva, which is also a Paadal petra sthalam.

The main entrance of the Murugan / Sivan temple faces north, but the temples themselves are located on a hillock. The temple has a total of 13 teerthams, including some within the temple premises. The ones outside are either at ground level or on the hillock – these include the Saravana Poigai, Paalsunai Teertham, Lakshmi Teerhtam, Brahma Koopam, Sanyasi Teertham, Teppa Teertham and Ganga Teertham.

There are also some temples around the hillock, including the Ardhanareeswarar cave temple, as well as the Kasi Viswanathar temple, both located on the southern side of the hillock. Between these two temples lies the Paal Sunai Teertham, where there is a Siva lingam installed for worship, known as the Paal Sunai Sivan.

While the Paal Sunai Teertham and the Kasi Viswanathar temple are known to be quite ancient, the Siva lingam here – colloquially called the Paal Sunai Sivan – was installed a few decades ago by Advananda Swami, who found a Siva lingam here amidst boulders and rocks on the pathway to the Kasi Viswanathar temple. Over time, this shrine has gained prominence as a temple in its own right.
