Sthala puranam and temple information
This small temple with its own walled complex, is a Tevaram Vaippu Sthalam referred to by Sundarar in the 8th song of the 31st pathigam of the 7th Tirumurai.
The temple complex itself is rather small today, but would have presented itself in a formidable size during the time of Sundarar, if one took into account the size of the temple tank opposite the main entrance.
There is not much by way of sthala puranam available for this temple. Brahmapureeswarar is a swayambhu murti facing east, while there is a separate shrine for Sugandha Kunthalambigai Amman. Interestingly, Amman’s shrine also faces east, though to the left of the garbhagriham. There are separate shrines for Chandikeswarar, Navagraham, Bhairavar and Suryan.
Other information for your visit
Puja is said to be conducted once a day, but from our visit it was not clear whether this was in the morning or evening. Nonetheless, one can either contact the temple priest, or the locals in town (refer contact information below) to have the temple opened for worship.
