Sthala puranam and temple information

The tiny hamlet of Chandrasekharapuram, located between Govandakudi and Valangaiman, boasts of four important temples for Siva as Agasteeswarar and Chandrasekharar, Perumal as Navaneeta Krishnan, and Kamakshi Amman. The Chandrasekharar temple, situated in the middle of the village, is also how the village gets its name. The village is located on the southern banks of the Kudamurutti river.

This Navaneeta Krishnan temple is located in the street opposite the Chandrasekharar temple, and abuts the house of the bhattar who takes care of the temple.

There is no sthala puranam that we were able to locate about this temple. Given the proximity to Govindakudi, it may have something to do with the arrival of Kamadhenu there, and the legends around the Avoor region.

The architecture here suggests it is perhaps from the late Chola period. Beyond the entrance is a long, covered corridor that leads straight to the maha mandapam, with only a bali peetham in the middle. To the left of the maha mandapam entrance is Vinayakar as Thumbikkai Azhvar. In the garbhagriham is Krishnan with Rukmini.

Surprisingly, the temple complex is quite large and spacious, although there are no shrines in the prakaram, except for Anjaneyar in the southwest corner. However, there are a few other assorted vigrahams and unidentified stone bas relief murtis in the temple. There is also a vigraham of Krishna as Kalinga Nardhana.
