Melacavery, the part of Kumbakonam north of the Kaveri river, is home to the historic Brahmapureeswarar Temple and Kailasanathar Temple. Neglected for years, the Brahmapureeswarar Temple underwent renovation during the 2015 Mahamaham festival. Believed to date back to the Chola period, this temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva as worshipped by Brahma, and features Pratyankara Devi, who is rarely found in a Siva temple.
