Sthala puranam and temple information
This temple built by Vittaladevan an assistant of King Vijayadevaraya. He was a staunch devotee of Panduranga. One night, the lord appeared in his dream and expressed his intention to grace the devotees of this origin. For this he ordered Vittaladevan to unearth his idol from the Tambraparani river bed and build a temple here. Vittaladevan obtained the murti, built the temple, and named the village around it as Vittalapuram. Pleased with his devotion, the lord appeared before him and granted him a boon. Vittaladevan wanted the lord to bless the devotees and people of this area for prosperity and peace. The lord granted the wish and blessed all.
It is said that this temple was frequented by Purandaradasa, Ramdev, Tukaram, Gnanadeva.
There are separate shrines for Bhama, Rukmini and Vishvaksena.
Milk porridge (pal payasam) is the favourite prasaadam for the lord here.
Devotees who are on the verge of arangetram (debut) of their arts like dance or music visit and offer prayers here.
